The Trip

Here is a tale I heard at school
About a famous sailing fool.
The whole world thought the earth was flat
But this guy said, "Round's where it's at."

He was a cool, convincing fella
And got three boats from Isabella.
He'd reach the East by sailing West
And bring that queen a treasure chest.

The Santa Maria was the ship he took,
The other two are in the book.
He might have reached the East OK
But America got in his way.

What he soon found became big news,
He had taken the first Bahamas Cruise
Then searched in Cuba for spices in jars
But headed home with a box of cigars.

So smart old Chris was a hero then.
He went where man had never been.
He found this place for me and you,
In fourteen hundred and ninety two.

The way this ends gives me much shame,
Cause I can't think of his last name.
