His mom yelled, "Sammy, goodness sake, Get your fangs out of that cake. That's not for you, little smarty, It's for tonight's New Year's party. "My son you're going through a phase And need to change your wayward ways. May I suggest a good solution Might be a New Year's resolution?" So Sammy Snake crawled out the hole And climbed up on the wash line pole. Once there he turned so he could see. Just who was at the old oak tree. He saw his cousin Adam Snake With his old buddy, Crazy Jake. Last week they'd cleared the hardware store. By simply crawling 'cross the floor. Saw Rollie Rattler hanging there With tail equipped with warning scare. Sam saw them give a big, "HIGH ONE." He knew the fun had just begun. And so our Sammy had a hunch That it was time to join the bunch. He slid on down and quickly found Carl Cobra coiled there on the ground. For Carl it seemed like quite the deal To wrap around a steering wheel. It gave a driver some surprise To gaze into cool cobra eyes. They joined the others in the tree Which soon was filled with cries of glee. These snakes were wrapped in special glory As each retold a scaring story. How in a dark and gloomy night One wrapped around a leg real tight. What fun to hide right in a sack Or crawl so slowly down a back, To pose atop folks' picture frames, Pop up in Chutes and Ladders games. Their greatest caper, they all were there, The ladies room at the county fair!!! Soon Sammy spoke, "I think we might Have filled the human folks with fright. Why don't we try to live a year As friendly snakes and quit the fear? "I'm telling you a real sad sight is Grandma Jones and her arthritis. Next year I'll dangle from her doors And swing a broom to sweep her floors. "And Adam, you can help Bill Brown, The kid whose kite keeps falling down. Up there you'll be an awesome sight: The handsome tail on Billy's kite. "Ole Jake, you love to crawl the street So here's a task you'll think is sweet. Stretch out to form a little lump, You'll make a really neat speed bump. "Rollie, you know Grandpa T. His grandson's cute as he can be. If he should fuss or start to cry, Why, you can rattle for that guy. "A cobra with his fancy hood At Christmas time will look real good. In red and green I clearly see Carl draped across a festive tree. "I'll leave it up to you guys now Can we five snakes make such a vow?" They wiggled, hissed, let out snake sighs, Then flicked their tongues and rolled snake eyes. But finally the deed was done, They all agreed—they'd act as one. A pact that through the coming year The folks could live without snake fear. Our Sammy felt so good and wise And said, "Let's celebrate, you guys. We'll tell our folks, they'll be so proud That we've become a helpful crowd. "We've planned what next year is about. Tonight we'll sing this old year out. Before we join in Auld Lang Syne Let's go and scare 'em one last time." Young snakes it's always very good To make the vows you think you should. Consider this before you make 'em: Don't make 'em if you plan to break 'em. Grandpa Tucker |
