Cycle Sammy

Sammy Snake would twist and sigh
Each time a Harley bike buzzed by.
And Sammy thought it would be neat
If he could be upon that seat.

Every night this snake would dream
Of riding on a fine machine.
He dreamed of girl snakes and their squeals,
"Oh, look at Sammy's cool new wheels."

So Sammy thought, "At least I'll try it,
I'll earn some cash and then I'll buy it.
And so he placed a special ad;
"A little snake needs work real bad."

You'd be surprised at what it takes
To find odd jobs for little snakes.
He made two bucks, but couldn't cope,
While rented as a jumping rope.

The most fun job he found to do
Was give a hiss and holler, "BOO!"
He's the one you might have seen
In the Haunted House on Halloween.

He saved his money in a cup.
Each week old Sam would count it up.
One day he filled the air with hollers,
"Hooray, I have the fifteen dollars."

But soon he learned some sad, sad stuff:
What he had earned was not enough.
There is no little snake that knows
How place value works with those zeros.

Fifteen THOUSAND is what it took!
Poor Sammy left with a forlorn look.
He told a cobra friend named Charlie,
"I fear I'll never own a Harley.

"I can't have one, it breaks my heart
But I can dress to fit the part."
Sammy wore a leather jacket
And leather boot. Wow, can you hack it?

Each morning he would start the day
In biker clothes by the main highway
Each time a bike went roaring by
He'd give a hiss and heave a sigh.

A rider saw him standing there
With small snake smile and longing stare.
Then, with a move like an acrobat,
Sam flipped and tipped his helmet hat.

Quickly the biker hit the brake
And said, "I see you, little snake.
Be cool, My Man, what do you say?
You're here each time I pass this way."

Sammy bowed and then he sighed,
"I know that I was born to ride,
But I must watch as you go by.
A Harley's price is just too high."

The biker said, "I love your hat,
You have to take a ride in that.
Meet me here tomorrow at eight,
Wear your leather and don't be late!

He wiggle waggled the whole night through,
So he only slept an hour or two.
As Sam crawled out their hole at dawn,
His mom yelled, "Put that helmet on!"

At eight there came an awesome sight,
Bikes on the left and on the right.
There in front, leading the pack,
Was Sammy's friend, he did come back!

Sammy couldn't believe his eyes.
His heart thump-thumped, what a surprise!
Attached to the bike was a happy sight:
A little red side-car on its right.

The biker shouted, "Climb aboard!"
When Sam got in the engine roared.
Then down the road the cycle flew
As Sammy Snake's great dream came true.

Wouldn't you know, for goodness sake,
The bikers love that little snake.
They take him with them constantly;
Most every day you just might see

Sammy cruising, feeling narley,
In the side car of that Harley.
The snakes all gather and they hiss,
"Here comes Sammy, look at thissss!"

Proud Sammy smiles as he zips by,
For he's a very happy guy.
He knew he'd never fill that cup,
But Sammy Snake did not give up.

Oh, a biker snake is really rare.
His story was told most everywhere.
This snake enjoys his time of fame
And Cycle Sammy is now his name.
